This is the cover for book 4 of Bizenghast, woot! Vincent finally has his own cover! Go him!

I always wanted to do a cover in blue and gold...also with a ship in it. I love ships!

inked with brown ink and brush, the colored with copic marker, 3 hours.

Actually I forgot to post what I put on my forum about this, which was that it WAS inspired by the contest winner Cor-chan's entry: [link]

The bound arms of Vincent, the position of his torso up against the pillar, the expression of his face and the color of his shirt all inspired this picture. Originally I wanted to have vines crawling up the side of the ship but it loked too busy and overdetailed. The concept had to be dramatically altered to fit the theme of the other three covers...namely, that the main figure had to be physically altered in some way (cover one, she has a violin for a torso...cover two, her eyes are on her hands...number three, she's part skeleton). I did an earlier sketch much closer to Cor-chan's drawing with only half of Vincent being held by the vines, but it was not as striking visually.

However I wouldn't have come up with this idea without Cor-chan's entry! She will still get credit as the cover conceptualist in the fourth book!

Wah, this is incredible. Vincent looks quite handsome as a ship's head. ^_^ I especially like the scales in the ensemble.

How'd you get those crackle effects? Are they the Photoshop filters or did you paint some kinda crackly stuff over it?

Can't wait until 4. ^_^

I change my mind. There are such things as a terrible artist. If you don't want to be one of them PRACTICE.

Actually I nabbed a bunch of paint sample slips from the hardware store that had neat patterns, scanned them in and layered them over the picture! Neato effect and fun to do!

Wow... uhm... a far cry from the contest winner's idea... no leaves... no choking vine around the mouth... an entirely different theme... but, oh well, you did say you were going to re-draw it.

Besides, I like it more than the contest winner, you do the mermaid thing so well. And no he's got attitude, before he looked all vulnerable, no offense to the artist.

Actually I forgot to post what I put on my forum about this, which was that it WAS inspired by the contest winner (don't question it, that's just how the inner machinations of my brain work) but had to be tweaked to fit tokyopop's needs. However I wouldn't have come up with this idea without her entry! The winner still gets credit as the cover conceptualist in the fourth book!

Vincent looks so skinny and rib-tastic! He should eat more...only...He's not real so he can't eat at all, but whatever, it's all cool.

It is a very cool cover though. It'll fit right in with the rest of them.

It's a brilliant peice of work. I know ships can be so difficult do draw from any angle, especially if you apply perspective to it (I was comissioned recently to decide a restaurant's logo; they wanted a bridge with a gondola coming underneath, complete with gondolieri, romantic couple, and starry, sky. I ended up doing the entire thing from a perspective shot from the very front of the gondola to the back. xD I worked a good 36 hours straight on that.)

And I know what you mean by loving the idea of blue and gold. Those royal, rich colors just look beautiful together. My old art teacher used to have us do projects and we'd only get to use two colors (with varying shades of colors) for the entire peice. One time she made us use blue and gold. :3 It was a magical experiance... The peice ended up so pretty.

But I must say I simply adore the helmet. The combination of shells and coral (I think they're shells and coral, anyway xD) is wonderful. I live at the beach and I always love seeing things made out the shells and vegetation.

Me: She's all 'Who are you?'
D: Say "God"
Me: I said 'The mother-loving Tooth Bunny. Who do you think?'
D: Haha xD
Me: I am the illegitimate love-child of the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny...
Me: I pretty much AM God : D
