Before you ask, this is NOT DOROTHY FROM OZ. This is Dorothy from a very very obscure manga called OZ, but the manga itself isn't about Oz. It just has the same name and the main girl has the name Dorothy. That's it!
I picked up the book in Shibuya when I was in Japan and thought it had really cute art, so I made a little model of grown-up Dorothy!
I made this for the modelling contest at Otakon, but didn't win anything. Turns out all the other entries were store-bought kits, glued and painted. Apparently that's what Otakon means by a 'modelling contest,' because they didnt even have a category for scratch-built models.
I remember back in the day when the modelling contest was about MAKING a model yourself, not just buying a pre-made one and painting it.
I guess I knew mine would be the only scratch-built model and that it wouldn't win anything, but I just really wanted to at least represent for the scratch-built modellers out there!
Dorothy is made of Sculpey and acrylic paint and decorated with a crystal bead at her collar and a marble ball in her hand. The pedestal is a chocolate-covered almond canister with the label removed For the silver doodad on the front, I used a dime store brooch and pried the plastic cameo bit off, then replaced it with the book's logo. I also added a ribbon and a little paper doily to the top of the canister. The key next to Dorothy is a key pendant from a necklace.
I don't care if I won anything, I still think this is my best model yet and I'm proud of it!
When I hear modeling contest I deffinetely think of something original that people built. That sucks that you didnt win anything and I think you did a really great but I think the greatest award of all is being proud of your own work regardless of what others think of it.
when you say modeling contest that's exactly what I think, definetly not premades. you're totally should have won just because it wasn't a premade! I hope more people notice the hard work and talent that go into your models because where as they might not be the greatest on earth, you know, they're still like 79456-13946245736 million times better than most of us could do xD

She's way pretty and very well done. I'm disgusted but not surprised. It's still pretty lame though, when everything was practically already made for the other contestants. I entered an "Original art" contest once, and they winner/best in show was a kid who traced a picture of Goku from dragonBallZ Oh well.. people can be stupid. or blind, when it comes to actual talent and not something factory made.
I tried to find you at Otakon, but failed epically. Hopefully, better luck next con.
And Otakon kind of failed this year because no one could get 18+ bracelets and everything was unorganized. Even the masquerade was at a different location!
When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
