So even though I'm constantly telling people that buying expensive special supplies won't make you a better artist, kids are always writing me and being all like, "Yeah sure, that's what you tell the noobs, but just between you and me PROFESSIONALS, what do you use?"
I will say this once more: I draw Bizenghast ON COMPUTER PAPER, WITH PENCILS AND PENS BOUGHT FROM THE DRUGSTORE.
And just to prove it's not the materials but how you USE them, I drew this picture, inked it with an ordinary Pilot pen from the grocery store and colored it WITH CRAYONS. A typical 16-color box of crayons I dug out of the bottom of my desk drawer. Wasn't even a new box, just a junky old one with some broken and ground-down crayons in it. This picture has not been retouched to smooth out the colors...this is exactly the way they scanned in. Took me about 40 minutes to color. I made the little white streaks in the color with a 6.99 exacto blade from Michael's.
SO THERE. CRAYON DRAWING. STOP WASTING YOUR MONEY ON SPECIAL MARKERS FROM JAPAN AND PAPER MADE FROM CLOUDS OR WHATEVER. IT WON'T MAKE YOUR ART ANY BETTER.
Whoa. Well said! And that is amazing art. Beautiful character.

Fantastic picture! XD It's almost unbelievable what people can do with anything, but it's very possible and this is proof right here. Not perfect, but for crayons? This is one hell of a coloring job~
That's awesome! I love how bright the crayons are too! It's beautiful. I totally agree with you, I can't afford remarkable paper and pens that apparently make it better and easier but it's no different from anything you can buy that's cheaper. xo
Well said, it's a shame for those of us who can't afford fancy art supplies to be told we have to have them to create artwork. I have to draw with mechanical pencils from a supermarket.
Great picture, the colouring is lovely. I especially like the blue feathers.
P= Point taken, I agree fully. People really underestimate what they have and what they can do... I, for example, used to CG-paint WITH A MOUSE. And still do, sometimes. Did my pictures look horrid? No. The only drawback was the speed and the pain in my right wrist.
When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.

We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

I am an avid supporter of Crayfish.
I hate using crayons though, personally (I never even used them when I was little).
But you're right, you can use the 12 pack of say, coloured pencils just as easily as the expensive ga-zillion pack of special coloured pencil.
