Nareesha by sadwonderland Nareesha by sadwonderland
EDIT: A lot of ppl seem to want this colored. I'm not going to because it's interior book art so it's supposed to be black and white, but if YOU want to color it then go nuts, and send me a link when you're done! :)

OK, is anyone else sick of opening a comic and being confronted with a parade of stick figures? Because that's what I see when I read most comics. Female figures that are blatantly labelled as beautiful and they're beyond being unrealistically thin...they're just sick.

I'm so sick of mangas that have their most beautiful characters being stick figures. That's why, when I was designing Nareesha (who is characterized in the book as being "the beautiful woman in the world") for book two of Bizenghast, I said HEY, let's make her super-full figured!

I'm glad some of my cosplay friends will dress as Nareesha. I made her to be a beautiful character that larger cosplay gals could cosplay with confidence. You CANNOT tell a cosplayer she's too fat to be Nareesha, because Nareesha is both really BIG and really HOT. BOO freakin YAH.

*sucker punch!*

I must applaud your creation of this character. Women comes in all shapes and sizes, and many artists and writers seriously need to realize that. T_T

She is very beautiful, by the way. ^_^

That's why I admire Beth Ditto, former skinny model who decided to gain weight on purpose to prove this same point!

Any chance you could create a male character for this purpose too? I would love to cosplay but I'm far too self-conscious about my size to participate in the realm of young, thin, muscular gentlemen.

I'm not really working on any characters right now, but there are lots of cool larger characters out there for men...more so than women, I think.  You just have to investigate some other fandoms!

You're probably right about needing to check out other fandoms. In my experience, large male characters are usually comic relief though and that doesn't really appeal to me. Thanks for replying though.

Love the art, by the way. :)

Read it before but I don't like the double standard implied; I feel like larger men in fiction are rarely given the same respect as larger women. Their wives may be attractive but they themselves are, more often than not, rarely considered attractive themselves. Their weight is made fun of more often than not.

Meanwhile, in the UK, we've had sitcoms like The Vicar Of Dibley and Miranda, which both feature less "conventionally" attractive women in leading roles (and personally, I find Miranda Hart very attractive). They feature plenty of self-deprecation about their looks but they're both also treated as attractive over the course of the show too in ways that male characters usually aren't.
